What is functional fitness?

Training that makes everyday life easier. Instead of isolating one muscle on a machine, you practise the movements your body already does every day: squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, running and getting up off the floor.

Fitness for the life you actually live

Think about your day. Lifting the shopping out of the boot. Carrying a child up the stairs. Moving furniture, chasing a bus, getting down on the floor to play and back up again. Every one of those is a squat, a deadlift, a carry or a lunge.

Functional fitness trains exactly those patterns, with good technique and a bit of intensity, so they get easier and you're less likely to get hurt doing them. You build strength, fitness and mobility at the same time, in one session.

It isn't about how you look in the mirror (though that tends to follow). It's about what your body can do.

The movements we train

Almost everything you do in a day is built from a handful of basic patterns. We teach each one properly, then build on it.

  • Squat

Sitting down and standing up. Air squats, goblet squats, front and back squats.

  • Hinge

Picking things up off the floor safely. Deadlifts, kettlebell swings, good mornings.

  • Push

Pushing away from you or overhead. Press-ups, presses, push presses.

  • Pull

Pulling towards you or yourself up. Rows, ring rows, pull-ups.

  • Lunge

Single-leg strength and balance. Lunges, step-ups, split squats.

  • Carry

Holding something heavy and moving with it. Farmer's carries, sandbag and sled work.

  • Core & rotation

Keeping your trunk strong and stable. Planks, sit-ups, slams, twists.

  • Engine

Fitness for heart and lungs. Rowing, bike, ski erg, running and skipping.

One workout, every level

What scaling means

Everyone in the class does the same workout, side by side, but each person does the version that's right for them that day. Your coach helps you pick the weight, the movement and the reps, so a complete beginner and a seasoned athlete both get a great session.

As you get stronger, you move up. No one's watching what's on your bar. Stronger than yesterday is the only goal.

Example: 3 rounds of 10 squats, 10 presses, 10 pulls

Move Starting out Building Advanced
Squat Squat to a box Goblet squat Barbell front squat
Press Press-up on a bench Press-up from the knees or floor Barbell push press
Pull Ring row, feet forward Band-assisted pull-up Strict pull-up

Common questions

Do I need to be fit before I start?

No. You get fit by coming, not before. Every workout is scaled, so you can start wherever you are today.

Is it the same as CrossFit?

It's similar in style: varied, coached, group workouts that mix strength and cardio. Our focus is on scaling every session so it works for every member, whatever their goals.

Will lifting weights make me bulky?

Not by accident. Building lots of muscle takes years of specific training and eating. What most people find is that they get stronger, leaner and more confident.

I have an injury. Can I still train?

Often, yes. Tell your coach before class and they'll work around it. If you're unsure, check with your GP or physio first.

What should I bring to my first class?

Comfortable clothes, trainers and a bottle of water. Arrive a few minutes early so your coach can say hello and show you around.
